The mosaic party is a fun and unique craft based activity that can take place in your own home on the kitchen table, in the garden, or in a hired venue. The average two hour party begins with the children sitting down to make their mosaic in their own design - with or withour a mirror - and they also make a mosaic coaster. Then, whilst they are having their party food, the mosaics are grouted and cleaned ready for the children to return to give them a final polish. By then they are dry and completely safe to take home in their own bag - and no mess will be left behind at all. Areas covered - South Wales, Bristol and Greater London (other areas will be considered)

Mosaic tryptich in Garden Suburb Infant School - wins first prize in Mega Mosaic Makers 2011

This mosaic was inspired by the painting ‘Tobias and the Angel’ from the workshop of Verrocchio which was the focus of the ‘Take One Picture’ scheme run by the National Gallery and enthusiastically taken up by the school under the direction of the infant school art co-ordinator Sarah Jowsey. We are delighted to be awarded first prize in 2011 in the Mega Mosaic Makers competition, organised by BAMM, the Bristish Association of Modern Mosaics and sponsored by Topps Tiles. http://megamosaicmakers.org.uk

There are 270 children in the school – 3 classes in each year group – so 9 classes in total. The children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 were working on a variety of cross curricular activities based on the painting and through discussion with them and their teachers it was decided to create a whole school mosaic piece on the theme of journeys – Tobias was making a long journey with the Archangel Raphael to collect a potion for his blind father

All the design work came from the children and each year group focused on either Land, (year 1) Sea (reception) or Sky (Year 2) and every child made a design collage or painting of one element of theme. From these I drew up the final design then, after approval worked again with each class for one lesson each, where every child made the piece they had designed for the mosaic – either a small ceramic piece or mosaic section. These were all laid out to form the design onto 3 x 1m square boards and over 6 days the children, teachers, assistant teachers, lunch time supervisers and parent helpers came to the temporary artists studio at the back of the hall to contribute to the mosaic. It was finished, grouted and installed in the newly decorated, colour co-ordinated foyer.

The piece was constructed using porcelain and vitreous glass tiles of colours in keeping with Italian renaissance– with small mirror tiles that glint under the spotlights, combined with small relief ceramic pieces of fish, coins, potion bottles and wave foam made by the children.

The piece took at least 12 days school contact then incalculable hours for finishing and grouting.

The mosaic workshop has proved to be so popular at festivals and events that it is now available for private parties in the home, in the garden or any hired space. Areas covered are South Wales, Bristol and Avon, Gloustershire and in and around London. Other areas considered so please ask.

They are suitable for children, both boys and girls, from about 7 years old (younger siblings welcome but may need supervision) - and the workshop can complement a party theme or colour theme (football colours, pink n' purple, black n' white) All materials and equipment will be provided - even tables if necessary - and mess will be minimal and easily swept up after the workshop.

It is also suitable for adult get-togethers such as hen parties, staff team building exercises, inset training, book clubs or gardening groups.

Whatever your age or ability, you will finish up with an original artwork which will be both beautiful and hard wearing. You will also learn the basic skills of this ancient art - after which you could pursue a brand new hobby!

Mosaic objects you can make include:- mirrors and pictures, coasters and teapot stands, door numbers and name plates, key fobs and pendants, pots and sculptures, masks and mobiles, stepping stones and plant markers etc etc...

The workshop would last approximately 2 hours, with a gap in-between for grouting, when food can be served and games played, and each child will make a mosaic finished and grouted to take away - and no mess.

Exterior floor mosaic in Penarth, Cardiff

This mosaic was commissioned by the Old Penarth Community Forum as a feature for a local community park and it was completed in April 2009. It depicts famous landmarks of the seaside town of Penarth, past and present, and was designed as a functional compass rose. The final design was by local landscape architect, Steve Welchman, and it was fabricated in my studio in Cardiff in 50x50mm porcelain mosaic tiles. The completed mosaic was adhered to purpose-built glass reinforced concrete slabs which were made by Specialist Precast Products of Cardiff, who also installed the finished piece.

Messages from the Fourth Plinth

This was a collaborative art project with three primary schools - Garden Suburb Junior School, Barnet, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Ynyswen, Taff, Treorchy and Severn Rd School, Cardiff. A group of pupils from each school wrote and illustrated a word, in their first language, expressing what was the most important thing in their life and I transferred these onto individual tiles. I then incorporated them into little mosaics which were given away to visitors to Trafalgar Square when I was on the Fourth Plinth. My website address, linking to this blog is on the back of each tile so that recipients can report back to let us know how far the mosaics - and the childrens' messages have travelled. Please leave me a comment here if you have a tile - and especially if it's in a language you don't understand and you would like to know what it means.

I am a professional public artist specialising in site-specific public art works in a variety of media, mainly mosaic, for interior and exterior locations including schools, hospitals, woodlands and urban environments. My work ranges from small scale commissions and bronze art medals to large scale public art works, school projects and and environmental improvement schemes.

I have a BA in Fine Art Sculpture from Wolverhampton University and an MA in Public Art, Theory and Practice from Chelsea College of Art, London and I am a qualified teacher of art and design. My studio is in Cardiff and I work all over the UK. Alongside my own practice I run workshops, courses and mosaic parties for all ages, as well as inset training for teachers.
